A Groundbreaking Inception
Hustler mowers were first developed in 1963 when the company’s founder, John Regier, thought to combine zero-turn technology from farm power equipment and a riding lawn mower. The first Hustler designs included only three wheels, each of which moved at the exact same speeds. The operator had only to turn the controls 180° and the machine would turn on the spot, utilizing counter-rotation to ensure that it stayed in the same place.
The invention worked exactly how he’d hoped, and in no time at all demand was through the roof. The easy lawn maintenance his innovation allowed for helped homeowners get cleaner, closer, and more uniform trims. Obstacles like trees and flower beds were suddenly no obstacle at all!
Growing Like A Weed
Before long, John Regier found himself swamped by customer demand and simply couldn’t keep up. He sold his designs to Hesston Corporation, which was able to build these mowers much faster and more efficiently. Later on, Hesston Corporation became Excel Industries, and in 1964 released their Hustler mowers in Hesston, Kansas.
